Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team picked up timely hitting as the Wolves handed Shaw University a pair of losses here, Sunday afternoon. Winning game one 8-2 and rallying to win the second, 5-3.
Game One: Newberry 8, Shaw 2
The Wolves rode a solid pitching performance by sophomore Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) as they held off the Bears for an 8-2 game one win.
Newberry (15-20) did most of its damage in the bottom of the first inning as the Wolves drove in four runs on a pair of hits and three Shaw (9-32) errors. With one out and runners on second and third, a wild pitch followed by an error on Shaw catcher Keyuanna White (Los Angeles, Calif.) brought home the first two Newberry runs in Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) and Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.). Shortstop Lindsay Cruz (Irmo, S.C.) then scored Holley on an infield single for a 3-0 Newberry lead. Senior Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) then made it 4-0 as she scored on a fielding error by Shaw shortstop Emily Montgomery (Gainesville, Fla.).
In the top of the third the Bears scored the first of their two runs in the game when pitcher Shakia Pledger (Atlanta, Ga.) singled and scored after advancing to second on a Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) error and made her way to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
The Wolves made up for the mistakes in the bottom half of the inning, scoring Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) on a Pledger wild pitch for a 5-1 Wolves' advantage.
Both teams exchanged a pair of runs in the fourth to keep it a four run ball game in favor of the Wolves. But in the bottom of the sixth it was Newberry who blew the game open after scoring two more runs on Felicia Taylor's ninth home run of the year.
Taylor finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple and a homer while scoring two runs and picking up two RBIs.
Holley threw 112 pitches while earning her fourth win of the year after striking out seven Bears and allowing just one earned run on six Shaw hits.
Game Two: Newberry 5, Shaw 3
Newberry picked up clutch hitting by Buccellato as they rallied to beat Shaw in the sixth inning of game two, 5-3.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the sixth, the Wolves' catcher belted a leadoff double to left field and scored after an error by Shaw third baseman Erneisha Cooper (Andrews, S.C.) to put the Wolves up 4-3. Three batters later it was pitcher Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) who added an insurance run to the Newberry lead with an RBI single to left field which scored Mirabal.
The Wolves grabbed the game's first run when Hilbourn singled and stole second to put herself in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning. A wild pitch then sent her to third where she stole home two pitches later for a 1-0 Newberry lead.
Shaw then tied the game in the top of the second after Monica Grimmage (Georgetown, S.C.) tripled down the right field line and scored after a Cruz error at shortstop later in the inning.
Newberry answered in the bottom half of the inning with Allison Lovelace (Columbia, S.C.) scoring from third on a botched throw by Shaw catcher Chelsea Holliday (Burlington, N.J.).
Grimmage then tripled again in the third, this time giving Shaw their first lead of the day after driving in two runs, making it 3-2 Bears.
Newberry tied up the game in the fourth with Chelsea Chipoletti (Brooksville, Fla.) picking up the RBI after scoring Mirabal on an infield hit. The Wolves held off the Bears in the fifth before ultimately taking the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Jeffcoat picked up the game two win after going all seven innings giving up six hits and striking out 10 Shaw batters.
Hilbourn stole two of the Wolves' four total stolen bases during the win while going 1-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. Jeffcoat and Buccellato each had two hits as well.
The Wolves return to South Atlantic Conference play this Thursday, April 7, as they host the league leading and nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
