AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to the Augusta State University Jaguars in the Wolves' season finale at Jaguar Field Tuesday. With the loss, Newberry's season concludes at 24-28.

Senior Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) - the only Newberry player to start and play in all 52 of the Wolves' games this season - went 2-for-3 with two walks and reached on an error to reach base all five times in his final collegiate game. John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with three walks in the game.

Augusta State scored in the first inning after Caleb Saggus reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Newberry tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth after a leadoff single by Wilbur Caldwell (Newberry, S.C.) was converted into a run on an RBI single by Love.

The Jaguars broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with five runs. Jeff Rice and Alex Walker hit RBI singles, and with two outs and the bases loaded, Saggus hit a three-run triple to right field to make it 6-1. He would be the last Jaguar to reach base as the Newberry staff shut ASU down in the seventh and eighth.

Newberry started to come back in the ninth, thanks to three straight walks by Fogarile, Love and Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.). Back-to-back RBI singles by Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.) and Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) brought home two runs, but the rally was cut short when a runner was thrown out after rounding second, and a groundout brought an end to the season.

In addition to the solid offensive games from Love and Fogarile, Goodwin had two hits in the game. Newberry out-hit the Jaguars, 9-7, but could not manage any extra-base hits. Augusta State pitchers struck out 13 batters in the game.
