JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - For the second match in as many days, the Newberry College women's tennis team could not locate their offense, falling by a 9-0 score at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex earlier today.
The Wolves saw their record sink to 4-16 and 0-9 in South Atlantic Conference play while the Eagles improved to 7-8 and 2-6 in league play.
Newberry was forced to forfeit one doubles match and one singles match to the Eagles due to the lack of a sixth player.
At the No. 1 doubles flight, Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) fell by an 8-1 score against Taryn Cappadona and Katie Brown. Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) and Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) were also unable to come away with a point in doubles play after the pair fell 8-4 to Stefy Stand and Devon Jennings.
In singles action, Ziehe lost her No. 1 flight against Cappadona by identical set scores of 6-4, 6-4. Simmons was unable to overcome the strong play of Stand at the No. 2 slot, falling 6-0, 6-1.
McManus tried to put the Wolves on the scoreboard, but could not generate enough offense against Brown at the No. 3 singles flight, falling 6-3, 6-2. Kyzer was shut out 6-0, 6-0 in her match against Goode.
Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) dropped her No. 6 singles match against Wilson by a 6-1, 6-2 tally to conclude the competition.
The Wolves return home to take part in their final match of the season when they welcome King (Tenn.) to the Cannon Courts. The Tornado and Wolves are set to begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14.
