Gamne Two: Newberry 9, SCAD 8 - Box Score
After being held to just one hit by Savannah College of Art and Design (1-1) pitcher Lisa Williams (New South Wales, Australia), Newberry (1-1) brought its bats to game two, picking up 14 hits and 4 home runs en route to 9-8 victory.
Freshman Codi Kelly led off the top of the first inning for Newberry and smashed a homer to leftfield in her first collegiate at bat to kick things off for the Wolves. It was more of the long ball for the scarlet and gray in the second as Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) homered to left followed by an Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) homer to left center. Senior Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) then singled to left to score Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kelly for the early 5-0 lead.
SCAD picked up one run in the bottom of the second with the Wolves answering in the top of the third with two more runs on a pair of RBI singles by Roof and Teague. The Bees responded in kind, putting up two of their own, making it 7-3 Newberry after three.
The Bees then put up another run in the fourth after holding Newberry scoreless, cutting the lead to just three.
Roof then homered for the second time of the game, this one a two-run shot to centerfield in the fifth. SCAD picked up four runs in two innings while holding Newberry in check to make it 9-8 heading in to the seventh.
Clutch pitching by Holley, however, kept the Bees from scratching across the tying run, giving the Wolves their first win of the year.
Holley also led the Wolves' offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored. Roof went 3-for-3 with two homeruns, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Game One: SCAD 16, Newberry 2 (5 inn.) - Box Score
