Newberry scores 6-3 victory over Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Using wins in four of its six singles matches, the Newberry College women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Limestone.

Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) extended her singles win streak to three matches with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph win over Bea Nichols to score the Wolves final team point of the day.

In doubles action, the Wolves drew first blood as Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) picked up an 8-2 win over Jimena Munoz Quiroga and Nicole Jones.

The Saints even things up one match later though, as Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) dropped their bout against Krystal Barker and Eve Aubry, 8-1.

Newberry would regain the lead though, thanks to Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) and Hoover. The duo made all the right moves in an 8-2 win against Haley Case and Bea Nichols.

In singles action, the Saints would knot the score yet again as Ziehe fell 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 to Munoz Quiroga. Limestone would take its first lead of the day when McManus was bested 6-0, 6-0 by Eve Aubry.

That was when the wins for the home team would come to an end as Simmons defeated Barker 6-2, 6-0 in the next match for the third tie of the day.

The scarlet and gray regained the lead for good when Kyzer picked up her first win of the season with a 6-7, 6-1, 10-6 victory over Jones in the No. 5 singles spot.

The Wolves travel to Spartanburg for a 1 p.m. tilt against Converse on Sunday, Feb. 27.
