Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Newberry College softball team followed up a two game sweep of Shaw University on Saturday by dropping a pair of games to No. 22 Armstrong Atlantic State in Sunday doubleheader action. Game one ended 4-2 while the second finished 13-8.
Game 1: Newberry 2, Armstrong Atlantic 4 - Box Score
After being no-hit by Armstrong Atlantic State (4-0) pitcher Megan Barnwell (Brooklet, Ga.) for three innings and falling behind 1-0, Newberry (3-3) shortstop Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) finally put a runner on the base path for the Wolves with an infield single in the top of the fourth. Senior Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) then hit her third homerun in two games as she sailed a ball over the centerfield wall to make it 2-1 Newberry.
But the Pirates got the better of Newberry pitcher Felicia Taylor (Venica, Fla.) in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game up with a walked in run and taking a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a Shelby Duff (Springfield, Ga.) two-run homer.
The Wolves were held hitless by Barnwell once again for the final three innings as they dropped to the Pirates, 4-2.
Barnwell threw the entire game for the Pirates, allowing just two earned runs on two hits and striking out 13 Wolves, including seven alone in the first three innings.
Gatewood and Hilbourn had the only two hits during the outing for the Wolves with Hilbourn grabbing the only two RBIs for the scarlet and gray.
Taylor picked up her second start in the circle for Joe Elston's squad, going six innings allowing three earned runs while striking out two and giving up just four Pirate hits.
Game 2: Newberry 8, Armstrong Atlantic 13 - Box Score
The Wolves kicked off game number two with a bang, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first after a throwing error gave the Wolves the first run of the ballgame. Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) then hit a two RBI single down the left field line, scoring teammates Taylor and Hilbourn to end the inning.
Megan Qualls then singled in a run for the Pirates in the bottom of the inning as did April Jowers (Columbus, Ga.) in the second to make it a one run ballgame in the third. The Wolves were held scoreless for the second straight inning in the top of the third with Qualls driving in two more for the Pirates with a double. Keela Scott (Liberty, Mo.) then put down a squeeze bunt to score Alisa Malte (Marietta, Ga.) to make it 5-3 Pirates after three.
The Pirates then busted the game open after a five run effort in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-3. The Wolves then cut the lead back down to three after scratching across four runs in the top of the fifth on a Shelley Jeffcoat RBI single (Lexington, S.C.) and a Yancey three run homer, her first in a Newberry uniform.
But another multi-run inning for Armstrong Atlantic did the Wolves in as they allowed three in the bottom of the fifth to put the game at 13-7. Yancey drove in one more in the final inning but the rally was short lived as the Wolves fell, 13-8.
Newberry pitcher Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) was handed her first loss of the season after going just 3.1 innings giving up eight runs on 10 hits. Jeffcoat replaced the struggling Holley, giving up the final five Armstrong Atlantic runs of the game.
Yancey led the Wolves with a 3-for-4 performance with 6 RBIs and a run scored. Taylor was 2-for-2 in the second game with two runs scored.
The Wolves will be back at it this Wednesday, Feb. 16, as they head to Clinton, S.C., to take on rival Presbyterian College in a doubleheader. Game one is on tap to start at 2 p.m.
