Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team picked up both ends of its home opening doubleheader as the Wolves run-ruled Shaw University twice, 11-3 in game one and 14-3 in game two.
Game 1: Newberry 11, Shaw 3 - Box Score
Newberry (3-1) came out a bit chilly in game one, failing to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning, just one of two innings on the day the Wolves failed to put up a run on the scoreboard. The scarlet and gray then capitalized on a Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) single that would eventually turn into the first Newberry run of the game after an Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) sacrifice fly to centerfield. Then Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.), in her first plate appearance of 2011, smacked a three-run homer over the rightfield wall to make it 4-0 Newberry after three.
Shaw (1-7) didn't stay quiet for long as the Bears put up a three spot in the top of the fifth to make it a one run ball game. But the Wolves responded in kind, knocking in a pair of runs on Taylor's second homerun of the game.
Newberry then put up five more in the bottom of the sixth with Cataldo leading off the inning with a one-run shot to centerfield. The Wolves then scored three more on a pair of passed balls by Shaw catcher Michelle Oliver (Fayetteville, N.C.) to end the game at 11-3 in favor of the Wolves.
Taylor's 2-for-3, two homer and five RBI game led the offensive force for Newberry in game one. Centerfielder Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) was also 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. As a team Newberry went 11-for-28 at the plate.
Taylor had a solid day on the mound for the Wolves as well, throwing all six innings giving up just three runs and striking out eight.
Game 2: Newberry 14, Shaw 3 - Box Score
The Wolves carried the big bats with them into game two as they came out of the gates swinging, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first after Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) singled in Gatewood for the first run of the game. Roof then stole third and went on to score after senior Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) sent a bomb over the leftfield wall.
Codi Kelly (New River, Ariz.) kick started the second inning for Newberry as the freshman homered for the second time of the season. This one, a two-run shot down the leftfield line. Hilbourn then hit her second home run of the game, matching teammate Taylor's game one performance, as she hit a two-run blast to end the inning.
The Wolves put up a pair in the third before allowing the Bears a run in the top of the fourth. The scarlet and gray then scored four more in the bottom of the inning to seal the deal.
Amber Holley (Aiken, S.C.) hurled five solid innings for the Wolves, giving up only two earned runs with five strike outs, earning her second victory of the year.
Roof finished the game with a 3-for-3 performance from the batter's box with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hilbourn was 2-for-2 with the pair of homers and four RBIs as well.
The Wolves have a short time to savor the victory before heading to Savannah, Ga., to take on Armstrong Atlantic State in a doubleheader tomorrow, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m.
