Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - Newberry lost its final regular season South Atlantic Conference match 3-0 to Wingate on Saturday evening. The loss means Newberry will be the seventh seed for next weekend's SAC tournament. The Wolves will take on Catawba in next Friday's quarterfinal.
The Wolves (15-14, 7-11 SAC) scored the first three points of the match, but it went downhill after that point. Newberry had the set tied at eight but Wingate went on an 11-3 run to go ahead 19-11. The deficit proved to be too much for the Wolves to overcome.
Newberry dropped the first nine points in the second set and was not able to recover falling 25-19 in the set. The Wolves made it interesting and came within three points at 21-18 after Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had two consecutive kills. However, the Wolves would get no closer. An error allowed Wingate to close the set.
It appeared as if Newberry would be able to salvage the third set. Prachar's kill put Newberry up 17-12, but Wingate showed why it hasn't lost in 82 consecutive conference matches. A Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) kill made it 19-16 before Wingate rattled off nine consecutive points to take the set and the match from the Wolves.
Parrish was the only Newberry player with double digit kills. The Indiana native had 11. Senior Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) had seven digs leaving her eight short of Newberry's single season digs record.
Junior Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) added 27 assists while Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 11 digs.
