Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team defeated Belmont Abbey 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20) at Eleazer Arena on Wednesday evening.
Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) got the ball rolling for Newberry (8-9) late in the first set. The senior had consecutive aces to put the Wolves up 23-16. Kills by Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif) and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) put away the opening set.
Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led the way for the Wolves in set two putting away five balls including set point. The sophomore finished the match with 14 kills and now has a team high 231 kills on the year. Parrish led Newberry with 18 digs.
Newberry couldn't finish the sweep in set three. The Crusaders (8-9) had the benefit of two Newberry attack errors along with a Molly Gwaltney kill to take a 15-10 lead. An attack error by Lydia Schellenberg put Newberry within four at 21-17, but the Wolves came no closer.
The Wolves found their groove in the fourth set. A kill by King gave Newberry its largest lead at 23-18. Freshman Lauren Prachar's (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kill put the Wolves at set point. The Indiana native finished with eight kills.
Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) finished with 24 assists while Hollingsworth had 13 digs. Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) each had four blocks to lead the Wolves.
Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at home against Catawba.
