NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team opened up the 2011-12 campaign on Monday with a 9-0 home victory over Columbia College.
The Wolves opened up the afternoon sweeping the Koalas in doubles play earning 8-2 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles the Wolves pairing of Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned an impressive 8-1 win over their foes from Columbia College.
The Wolves No. 1 doubles side was comprised of Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) and Susana Aquirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador), while Ashley Latham (Columbia, S.C.) and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) made up the No. 3 side.
Newberry also swept Columbia College in singles action, taking all six matches in straight sets. Strong earned a win in her first singles match for Newberry after transferring from Converse at No. 1 singles.
Fellow newcomers Aguirre and Adum picked up straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Adum won her match without surrendering a game point. Both freshman Emily Heisel (Port Orange, Fla.) and
Ziehe won their matches in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Wrapping up the afternoon was Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) who took a straight set victory over Danielle Beumont of Columbia College.
