Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - In a game Newberry needed to have to stay afloat in the South Atlantic Conference tournament race, the Wolves got arguably its best team performance of the season in a sweep of Mars Hill (-19, -16, -16) at Eleazer Arena on Friday evening.
"This was a great performance by our girls," head coach David Nicholson said. "We lost to them at their place and we had something to prove tonight."
Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the way for Newberry recording a double-double with a team high 12 kills and 11 digs. Prachar put the final touch on a 10-4 run to end set one.
The Wolves (14-12, 6-9 SAC) cruised in the final two sets. Three errors by Mars Hill and a kill by Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) opened up a 7-2 lead in the second set. Newberry continued full throttle never allowing the Lions back in the match. A Prachar ace and an attacking error by Mars Hill gave set two to the Wolves.
"It was great for us to grab the lead in a match and then continue to stick it to the other team," Nicholson said. "It's a sign of a team starting to mature."
Freshman Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) came out on fire to start set three. She had three kills in the midst of a 5-0 to begin the third.
Mars Hill showed life running off five straight points of its own to knot the set at five. But, the Wolves ran off three straight points with the help of a pair of Lions' attack errors. Mars Hill shot themselves in the foot with 22 attacking errors in the match. Newberry cruised the rest of the way outscoring the Lions 20-11 to take the win.
Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) continues her assault on Newberry's single season digs record. The senior had 15 digs leaving her 36 short of the record number 454.
Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) made the hitters' lives easier all night with 35 assists. Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) continued her solid defense with 10 digs.
The Wolves resume action at 2 p.m. Saturday against Tusculum.
