Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. - With the season winding down toward its end, the Newberry volleyball team has started to play a bit better. Today's 3-1 (27-25, 25-11, 18-25, 25-20) win over Lander marks Newberry's second consecutive win.
"It's a good time for us to find our rhythm," head coach David Nicholson said. "The postseason is quickly approaching and we will need to be at our best if we expect to make any noise."
The Wolves (13-12) got off to a fast start claiming an 8-3 lead before allowing Lander back in the first set. Newberry hung on to the lead, barely. The Bearcats fought off two set points at 24-23 and 25-24 before Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) put the ball and the set away for the Wolves.
Newberry had a much easier time in set two taking the set 25-11. The Wolves scored the first four points and dominated the rest of the way. Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) had consecutive kills to end the set.
Lander answered Newberry in the third set jumping out to a 10-3 lead. While the Wolves chipped away at the Bearcats' lead, they never found their rhythm. A service error got the Wolves within three points at 19-16, but a 6-2 run gave Lander set three.
The fourth set was tight until late. Newberry held a 19-18 lead and rattled off three straight points on two Lander errors and a kill by Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.).
Parrish and Jessica King's (Los Angeles, Calif.) block assist put the set and match away for Newberry, who returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against Mars Hill.
Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led Newberry for the second consecutive match recording 13 kills. The freshman has 36 kills in her last two matches.
Parrish led Newberry with 21 digs while Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) added 16. Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had 33 assists.
