Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Freshman Amanda Soper has improved her play in the second half of the season recording double digit kills in three of her last four matches. Tonight's 17-kill effort helped the Wolves to a 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14) win over Brevard at Eleazer Arena on Friday evening.
"We really pulled through and fought for this win," Soper said. "We're all beginning to come together. When it gets tough we're beginning to learn what we need to do to turn everything around."
The turnaround Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) speaks of came in the second and third sets. Newberry (11-10, 4-7 SAC) dominated the first set 25-19 but looked flat all through the second and early in the third.
After falling 25-19 in the second, it looked like Newberry would follow suit in the third. However, with Brevard leading 13-7, the Wolves showed they can be a poised team. After that point, Newberry looked unstoppable going on a 13-2 run to take a commanding 20-15 lead.
"We really showed some toughness tonight," head coach David Nicholson said. "We haven't always done that this year, but I'm proud of the way our girls responded to adversity tonight."
Soper led the way with three kills during the run while Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) and Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each had two to fuel Newberry.
Newberry cruised in the fourth set taking an early 11-2 lead after a Parrish kill. Brevard never challenged the Wolves in the fourth and Soper's thunderous kill put the match away for Newberry. The California native hit a season high .483 for the match.
Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) finished with 35 assists while Parrish added 14 kills for the Wolves. Newberry returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne.
