Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - When a team has its back against the wall like the Newberry College volleyball team did tonight against Anderson, it looks for its star to be dominant. South Atlantic Conference kills leader Samantha Parrish was all that and more this evening leading the Wolves to a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 30-28) win in a game it badly needed on Tuesday evening.
"Sam's play was dynamite tonight," Newberry coach David Nicholson said. "When we're in games we really need to win, we need her to step up and lead this team."
Parrish (Angola, Ind.) did just that tonight coming up with a match-high 16 kills. She coupled that with 10 digs for a double-double. Her 272 kills on the season is best in the SAC.
Newberry (10-10, 3-7 SAC) cruised through the first set winning on a blast by Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who looked more like her old self in tonight's match. The freshman finished with 11 kills and nine digs.
"It was nice to see Lauren hit efficiently this evening," Nicholson said. "If we're going to make noise late in the season we're going to need her to play up to her ability."
Set two was tougher for the Wolves, who staged a huge comeback after being down 24-21. A Parrish kill put the Wolves within two. After that, she took over with her service game scoring four straight points to take the set.
Perhaps the biggest play of the sequence came from junior Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio), who tied the match at 24 with a surprise attack that caught the Trojans off guard. The setter aided the hitters' performance with 21 assists in the match.
Newberry took the next two points via an attack error and another set-ending kill by Prachar.
The final set was back and forth as the 30-28 score indicates. Newberry had match point at 25-24 but an error helped Anderson fight it off. The Wolves showed their resolve fighting off two match points on an error and on a Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) kill. Prachar, who came up with huge kills all evening long, gave the wolves match point and Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) put the Trojans away.
Senior Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) kept the Wolves in several key points. Hollingsworth finished with 20 digs.
The win ties the Wolves with Anderson for the eighth and final spot in the SAC tournament with eight conference matches remaining.
Newberry will return to action Friday at 7 p.m. against Brevard.
