NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves (1-0) took off to a 28-point first quarter lead and steadily pulled further away in a 55-0 rout of Livingstone College (0-2) at Setzler Field to open the season Saturday.
NOTICE: After further review of the NCAA 2010 Statisticians' Manual, a play was incorrectly recorded as penalty yardage instead of a sack and lost yardage on an intentional grounding penalty in the third quarter. With this adjustment, Newberry's defense allowed only eight (8) total yards of offense in the game, with minus-39 rushing yards. Based on available records, this is a school record for fewest yards allowed in a game. The previous record was 21 yards allowed vs. North Greenville in 2001.
The Wolves' first four drives all ended in touchdowns, leaving no doubt in the final result of the game. Quarterback Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) completed 6-of-9 passes for 108 yards and four touchdowns in his first collegiate start.

Senior wide receiver David Pressley (Anderson, S.C.) caught touchdown passes of two and 27 yards, while Edward Gilliard (Summerville, S.C.) caught a 39-yard touchdown and Cameron Winchester (Gilbert, S.C.) caught a 30-yarder.
In the midst of the offensive fireworks, senior defensive end Derrell Kinard (Boiling Springs, S.C.) put on a show of his own. While applying pressure to the Livingstone quarterback, Kinard made a spectacular one-handed interception and scampered 27 yards into the endzone.
By the time the Wolves' fourth drive ended, the hosts held a 35-0 lead.
The offense was not the only bright spot of the game by any means. The defense held the Blue Bears to only eight total yards, with a net of minus-39 on the ground. The shutout was the team's first since ending the 2008 season with a 17-0 win at Brevard, and the 55-point margin of victory was the most since another 55-point win in 2007, a 64-9 win over West Georgia.
The Wolves held the Blue Bears to 0-of-11 on third downs and forced Livingstone to punt eight times. Brian Spencer (Columbia, S.C.) blocked two punts in the game which were originally not credited as blocks until further review of the statisticians' manual.
After taking a 35-0 lead into the locker room, the reserve players made the most of chance to shine in the second half as Treginald Wilson (Mayesville, S.C.) had a 35-yard touchdown carry and quarterback Parker Hite (Ninety Six, S.C.) hooked up with Max Elliott (Clover, S.C.) for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
The kicking game was perfect on the night, with Britt Blackmon (Kershaw, S.C.) going 5-for-5 on PAT attempts and making a 41-yard field goal. Nick Kinney (Goose Creek, S.C.) was 2-for-2 on PATs, made a 26-yard field goal and averaged over 37 yards per punt, with all three downed inside the Livingstone 20-yardline.
Lyndon Ingram (Columbia, S.C.) was Newberry's leading rusher with 44 yards on six carries, leading 13 Wolves who carried the ball 41 times for 192 yards. Six receivers caught eight passes for 140 yards and five touchdowns, led by Pressley's three catches for 28 yards and two scores.
Dominique Walker (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Arterio Arnold (Greenville, S.C.) each had five tackles to lead the way for Newberry, who had 36 different players record tackles. Andre Clark (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Brandon McCall (Sumter, S.C.) each recorded sacks, while McCall forced two fumbles. Kinard and Brooks Burnette (Bonneau, S.C.) each had interceptions with 27-yard returns.
Newberry returns to action next Saturday, September 11, hosting Valdosta State (1-0) for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
