Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - A rough night saw the Newberry Wolves' longest winning streak in 19 years come to an end, as the Carson-Newman Eagles pulled off a 25-19, 25-22, 25-8 sweep at Holt Fieldhouse on Friday night.
Newberry drops to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Carson-Newman is now 8-3 and 2-3 in SAC play. The Wolves will attempt to rebound on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn.
Katie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) and Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led Newberry with five kills apiece, while Carson-Newman's Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) had a match-high 17 kills.
Things started off on the wrong foot for the Wolves, as Carson-Newman scored the first five points of the first set, which was one of three such runs in the set for the Eagles. The Eagles contributed to Newberry's misery with five early blocks.
Newberry rallied and attempted to comeback with five straight points while C-N was on 24 points, but the Eagles ultimately took the first set by a 25-19 margin. Carson-Newman hit .219 in the set, while Newberry was held at .000 because of seven attack errors, five on Eagle blocks.
The Wolves displayed a fighting spirit in the second set despite falling far behind early. After the Eagles took off to a 14-3 lead, Newberry scratched and clawed its way back into the set, getting as close as three points behind before C-N took the set by a 25-21 count.
Newberry committed eight errors in the first 14 points of the set to stake Carson-Newman to the early lead, but Carson-Newman nearly returned the favor in the late stages of the set, giving away seven points after leading by 10. It was not a pretty set for either side, as Newberry hit -.025 and Carson-Newman hit .077.
The third set started off better for the Wolves, but another Carson-Newman surge put Newberry in an early 11-4 hole after being tied at 4-all. After a back and forth battle for the next six points, the Eagles took off and never looked back. Carson-Newman scored 11 consecutive points to put the match away and claims its fourth consecutive victory in the series.
The Eagles put up 11 blocks and held Newberry to its worst hitting percentage since 2006.
