Newberry plays Pfeiffer to 1-1 draw

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry College men's soccer team failed to put the finishing touch on the Pfeifer University Falcons as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw during a double overtime showdown.

Newberry (1-4-2) freshman Shane Robinson (Charleston, S.C.) snuck his second goal of the year into the lower left corner of the net on a Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) cross to put the Wolves up 1-0 in the 58th minute.

The Wolves defense held tight until the 83rd minute when Pfeiffer (1-3-2) defender Johannes Tisell (Miondal, Sweden) found a crack in the Newberry resistance and sent a shot just to the left and out of the reach of Newberry goalie Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.), tying the game at one a piece.

Newberry took three shots on goal during the two overtime periods but failed to get the game winner past Pfeifer goalie Alex Moreno (Huntsville, N.C.). The Wolves took a total of five overtime shots while the Falcons managed just three.

Arroyo led the offensive charge for Newberry with six shots, three on goal, while teammate Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) took four shots with three on target as well. As a team, Newberry outshot Pfeiffer by just two, 24-22, with both teams taking 12 shots on goal.

Sweatt played the entire 110 minutes in goal for Newberry as did Pfeiffer's Moreno. Both keepers saved 10 shots with Sweatt saving 7 in the first half alone, five of which came in the first seven minutes.

The next game for the Wolves will be this Saturday, Sept. 25, at USC Aiken before Newberry returns home for a South Atlantic Conference contest against Tusculum on Saturday, Oct. 2.
