Wolves tame Tornados, win streak at seven

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - One of the main storylines for the Newberry College Wolves Volleyball team this year has been the phenomenal play of the freshmen on the squad. Brevard had been listening to all this hype and focused on trying to slow down Samantha Parrish (Angloa, Ind.).

The trouble is, they forgot all about Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.).

The 6-0 outside hitter racked up 11 kills and hit .421 to lead the Wolves (9-3, 2-1 SAC) to a 3-0 victory over the Brevard Tornados (2-7, 0-5 SAC). The Tornados have failed to win just a set against the Wolves for the past three years.

“One thing that we really try to push is the importance of balance on the floor,” said third-year head coach David Nicholson. “They were so determined to try and stop Sam, and that opened the door for Anne and Kara to make some plays.”

The start of the first set featured the two squads trading points and tying the game four times throughout the first seven points for each team. A Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C) kill would give the Wolves the lead for good, and on the next point Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.) and Parrish teamed up for a block - one of five that the Wolves would end up tallying on the afternoon. Brevard would pull to within 16-12 before Newberry stepped on the gas. Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.) nearly bested the Tornadoes single-handedly, reeling off three straight service aces to make the score 23-15 for the home team. A Parrish block and a Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) kill would end the decisive 9-3 run giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves charged out for set two and found themselves up 6-1, courtesy of three Tornado errors and kills by Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) and Staudinger. The hosts would hold the lead until a renewed Tornado attack made things 17-all. The Brevard comeback was stymied by the Tornados themselves as they committed five errors over the remainder of the set. Coupled with some timely kills from Harris and Parrish the Wolves would take set two, 25-23.

The hosts would close things out in the third set with Staudinger recording four of her 11 kills in the deciding set. Brevard tried to stay in the set early, but the multi-pronged Newberry attack proved overwhelming as six Wolves recorded a kill to take the match 3-0 by a 25-16 score in the third set.

In addition to her match high 11 kills, Staudinger chipped in with three digs, a pair of assists and a block assist. Harris was the other member of Newberry's primary scoring duo, accumulating 10 kills, seven digs, two assists and a solo block.

Nye had a solo block and a pair of block assists to help the Wolves out from a defensive standpoint. Blakely dispensed a match high 33 assists to go along with seven digs and a trio of kills.

Scott and Parrish would get five and six kills respectively and they each had three service aces.

The Wolves look to win eight matches in a row for the first time in over a decade when Mars Hill pays them a visit on Tuesday (September, 21). The Lions and Wolves are set to duel at 7 p.m.
