Wolves drop SAC opener to Railsplitters 3-1

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Despite putting in an early goal on Lincoln Memorial, Newberry College failed to turn early success into a win as they fell to the Railsplitters, 3-1, in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both squads.

Newberry (0-6, 0-1 SAC) senior Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) punched in a free kick from 20 yards out in the fourth minute to give the Wolves an early lead over Lincoln Memorial (5-0, 1-0 SAC).

Railsplitter Sarah Harvey put a penalty kick past Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) in the 14th minute to tie the game up at one before intermission.

Sarah Taylor then knocked in her fourth and fifth goals of the season to make it three unanswered points by Lincoln Memorial to end the game, handing Newberry its sixth straight loss.

The Wolves took a total of 12 shots and six on goal during the contest, three of which were by Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada).

Rhoades played the full 90 in front of the net for Newberry, saving nine of Lincoln Memorial's 12 shots on goal.

Newberry will look to get back on the winning track as they continue their five game home stretch when Anderson University comes to town this Tuesday, Sept. 22. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
