Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - The last time Newberry faced off against a South Atlantic Conference opponent, things didn't turn out so well for the Wolves.
They seem to have forgotten about that misstep.
In what could only be described as one of the more commanding performances in recent memory, the Wolves (8-3, 1-1 SAC) thrashed the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (5-3, 2-2 SAC), 3-0, in front of 149 faithful fans. The offense was clicking for the scarlet and gray as evident by a .391 attack percentage - their highest of the young 2010 season.
"What a match," said head coach David Nicholson. "We came out ready to play and everyone seemed to have the same killer instinct out there. I'm thrilled that we could produce like this on our home court in front of so many of our fans."
Things got off to a great start for the Wolves as Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) opened up the scoring in set one with a service ace. After swapping points early, the Wolves jumped out to a 17-10 lead featuring a pair of Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) service aces and a pack of Wolves finding open pieces of real estate on their home floor to place kills. The momentum turned toward the Bears, though, as they managed to chip away at Newberry's lead. An 11-4 run for the visitors would knot things up at 21 and make for an exciting finish in the first set. After a timeout by the Wolves, Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) would pick up a kill each and Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) would add a service ace to give the Wolves an opportunity to serve for the set. The Bears still wouldn't submit, tallying three straight points to tie things again. After a kill each by both squads, an attack error by the Bears and a block by Parrish and Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.) would give the Wolves their first lead in a match at Eleazer this season, 1-0.
The second set began with four quick points for the Wolves, and seemingly in the blink of an eye the scoreboard read 12-4 in favor of the home team. The run featured the usual suspects of Harris, Parrish, Scott and Staudinger racking up kills while Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) recorded a rare kill as well. The Bears made an attempt to come back, narrowing the tally to 21-16 but the Wolves put a stop to it, taking set two 25-19.
The season high .522 attack percentage was unquestionably the highlight of the deciding third set. A sluggish start put the hosts in an 0-2 hole but they quickly climbed out and began to trade scores with the Bears. After a 6-6 deadlock Parrish rattled off a kill and a pair of service aces to give the scarlet and gray a lead they would not relinquish. Again, the Bears tried to keep things manageable down the stretch but Newberry snuffed out the comeback bid again and took set three by a decisive 25-14 tally.
Parrish would lead the way for the Wolves with 15 kills and a .520 attack percentage. Staudinger had a superb offensive effort accumulating 11 kills and leading the team in attack percentage with a .667 mark. Scott rounded out the scoring trio for the Wolves, accounting for nine kills. Another welcome change to the stat line was the advantage in blocks for the Wolves - 5-1. Parrish and Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.) each had three block assists while Scott tallied a pair and Staudinger and Harris each had one.
Blakely dispensed a match high 35 assists to go along with a pair of kills, eight digs and her service ace. Brittany Wood (Pendleton, S.C.) chipped in one of eight Newberry service aces as well.
The Wolves return to action tomorrow, looking to earn their first seven match win streak since 1991. Opposing them will be the Brevard Tornados. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
