Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Wolves used a .184 attack percentage to earn their first five match win streak in three years as they bested Columbia College, 3-1, at Porter Gymnasium. For the second consecutive match the Wolves dropped the first set then rallied to take the next three and the match.
"We started out a little slow tonight, but I thought we settled into our game nicely," said head coach David Nicholson. "Kara had a great match and we kept some points going and the balls fell in our favor tonight."
The first set saw the Wolves fall behind early and their deficit reached as many as six points before they battled back to tie things up at 19. Newberry would use a 3-1 run to take a 22-20 lead thanks to a Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.) service ace and one of Kara Harris' (Grandview, Texas) 17 kills on the evening. Columbia fought back to knot things at 22 and a pair of attack errors by the scarlet and gray would help the Fighting Koalas to a 25-23 set one win.
Newberry had a questionable beginning to set two, giving Columbia four out of their first five points by way of the error. The Koalas had a lead of 12-6 before Nicholson called a time out to talk things over. The Wolves responded with a 10-3 run that featured Harris accumulation of five kills and Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) chipped in a pair of her own. The Wolves wouldn't trail again and went on to tie the match at one each.
Set three was when the Wolves offense really began to take shape. The visitors only recorded eight errors and never trailed in the set. Coupled with a sensational .302 attack percentage, Newberry jumped out to a 2-1 lead.
The deciding set saw the Wolves play the part of the comeback artists yet again. Trailing 8-5, the Wolves used three straight kills from Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) to tie things up. After exchanging points the Wolves would go up 11-10 via a Bri Blakely (Houston, Texas) service ace and never look back. Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.) would give the Wolves a 25-22 set win and a 3-1 match triumph with her seventh kill of the night.
Harris led the way with her match high 17 kills and tallied 12 digs for a double-double. Parrish wasn't far behind, registering a double-double of her own with 15 kills and 13 digs. Scott had a pair of block assists to go along with her seven kills. Blakely led the way in the assist department, dispensing a match high 42.
The Wolves look to extend their winning streak to six as they head back to Eleazer Arena. Conference play starts up again as Lenoir-Rhyne comes to town on Friday (Sep. 17). The Bears and the Wolves are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
