Newberry drops season finale to Converse, 7-2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team saw its lone senior notch two wins on Senior Day as Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) won in both singles and doubles despite the squad falling to Converse College, 7-2.

Newberry finishes the year at 1-15 overall. Converse improves to 7-10.

The team and head coach Catherine Dunagan honored Mortimer before the match began. Mortimer ended her Newberry career in style, knocking off Olivia Self at the top flight in singles play, 6-4, 6-1. In other singles matches, Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) both fell by 6-0, 6-0 scores to Lindsey Kelly and Rachel Wilkes, respectively. Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match to Lee Cantey, 6-1, 6-0, and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Gulnora Yuldasheva, 6-2, 6-3. In the scarlet and gray's sixth flight singles match, Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) battled hard against Fracesca Mayer in a close match before coming out on the losing end, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles action, Mortimer earned her second win of the day with doubles partner Stephanie Matthews as the two topped Self and Kelly, 8-3. In Newberry's other doubles matches, Crouch and Simmons nearly took down Wilkes and Cantey but fell, 8-5, and Kyzer and Hoover dropped a match to Yuldasheva and Mayer, 8-1.
