Newberry falls to Wingate, 8-1

WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team took one match but fell to the Wingate Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference play on Thursday, 8-1.

Newberry drops to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the SAC. Wingate moves to 11-6 on the year and 6-2 in the SAC.

In singles play, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) gave Newberry a first-flight victory with a strong 6-2, 6-3 win over Kara Stasikelis. Unfortunately for the scarlet and gray, the Bulldogs would pull away in the rest of the singles action. Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match against Kelli Ferguson, 6-1, 6-0, and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Samantha Alschlager, 6-0, 6-0. Both Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) lost by 6-0, 6-0 margins to Helen Goreski and Hollyn Alberghini, respectively. Ewa Opala also came away with a win after a Newberry default.

In doubles play, the team of Mortimer and Matthews battled hard and nearly earned a win against the team of Stasikelis and Ferguson but fell just short, 9-7. Simmons and Crouch lost to Alschlager and Alberghini, 8-1, and a Newberry default gave Wingate the 8-1 final score.

Newberry will return to South Atlantic Conference action on the road against Mars Hill on Thursday, April 8. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
