NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team ran into a tough South Atlantic Conference opponent on Saturday in a match against Carson-Newman and fell to the Eagles, 9-0.
Newberry drops to 1-9 on the season and 0-4 in SAC. Carson-Newman improves to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the SAC.
Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) nearly battled to a win in singles play against Amanda Bartlett but lost by a close margin, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. In other singles matches, Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match to Elizabeth Sneed, 6-0, 6-1, while Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Kylie Elliot, 6-0, 6-2. Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) came up short against Taryn Cappadona, 6-0, 6-1, and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) was defeated by Megan Wilson, 6-0, 6-0. Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) lost a set to Stephanie Goode, 6-0, and trailed 1-0 before retiring.
In doubles play, the team of Mortimer and Simmons made some noise on the scoreboard but ultimately fell to Bartlett and Cappadona, 8-3. Matthews and Crouch lost to Sneed and Elliot, 8-0, and Hoover and Kyzer dropped a match against Goode and Wilson, 8-0.
Newberry hits the road for its next match, a SAC contest against Wingate on Thursday, April 1. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
