TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team took a break from South Atlantic Conference play for a Tuesday tilt against North Greenville but fell short against the Crusaders, 7-2.
Newberry drops to 1-8 after the match. North Greenville improves to 5-6.
Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) picked up her fourth singles win of the season with a victory over Salem Erni, 6-4, 7-5. In other singles matches, Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Katherine Shaw, 6-0, 6-0, Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) came up short against Cherie Curtis, 6-2, 6-0 and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Cassie Curtis, 6-1, 6-0. Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) also was tripped up against Sarah Stanga, 6-0, 6-0, and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) fell to Natalie Stewart, 6-0, 6-1.
The team of Mortimer and Matthews knocked off Erni and Shaw in a nailbiter, 8-7, winning the tiebreaker by a 7-5 score. In other doubles action, Simmons and Crouch lost to Curtis and Curtis, 8-2, and Kyzer and Hoover fell to Stanga and Stewart, 8-1.
Newberry will next head to Augusta, Ga., for a match against Augusta State on Thursday, March 25. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
