Newberry drops first road test to Coker, 6-3

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team dropped its first road contest of the season to the Coker College Cobras, 6-3.

Newberry (0-2) battled and earned wins from the pair of Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) in doubles and Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Sierra Hoover in singles play against Coker (2-4).

In doubles action, No. 3 doubles pair Sierra Hoover and Lindsay Kyzer knocked off Brittany Yando and Emma Hayes, 8-4. In Newberry's other doubles matches, Autise Mortimer and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Alyssa Blanchard and Stephanie Medley (8-4); and the team of Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match to Kendall Sigmon and Stephanie Harrelson (8-2).

In singles play, freshman Sierra Hoover earned her first collegiate win with an emphatic victory over Emma Hayes (6-2, 6-1). Autise Mortimer also picked up her first win of the campaign against Alyssa Blanchard (6-4, 3-6, 6-1). Amanda Simmons dropped a match against Stephanie Medley (6-3, 6-2); Rebekah Crouch fell to Kendall Sigmon (6-3, 6-2); Lindsay Kyzer came up short against Brittany Yando (6-0, 6-1); and Stephanie Matthews lost to Stephanie Harrelson (6-1, 6-3).

Newberry hosts Columbia College next on Monday, February 22. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
