Newberry falls in season opener to No. 38 Lander, 9-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's team fell short in its first contest of the season against No. 38 Lander, 9-0.

The day began with doubles play as top-flight pair Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) dropped their match against Brandi Cordell and Aurelia Ruffat (8-2); Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) and Stephanie Matthews (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Eliza Adusumilli and Ana Luiza Zaia (8-0) and Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) and Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) took a game but lost to Caitlin Fell and Nicola James, 8-1.

In singles action, Autise Mortimer fell to Brandi Cordell (6-1, 6-1); Amanda Simmons lost to Aurelia Ruffat (6-1, 6-0); Rebekah Crouch came up short against Eliza Adusumilli (6-0, 6-1); Lindsay Kyzer was defeated by Caitlin Fell (6-0, 6-0); Stephanie Matthews dropped a match to Nicola James (6-0, 6-0) and Sierra Hoover was defeated by Melanise Newbold (6-0, 6-1).

Newberry moves to 0-1 to begin the season. The scarlet and gray will head to Lancaster, S.C. on Monday, February 15, to face USC Lancaster in exhibition play. The first matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
