NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team dropped its season opener to No. 16 Lander, 8-1.
Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned a point for Newberry on a blustery Wednesday afternoon with a doubles match win over Paul Arrigoni and Gary Bertoldo, 8-6.
In other doubles action, Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) fell in a close match to Pierre Frances and Levan Clark, 8-8 (7-2). In Newberry's final doubles match, Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) lost their contest to Chris Mattson and Carlos Marques, 8-2.
On the singles side, Maxim Sukharev dropped a match to Paul Arrigoni (6-1, 6-1); Lucas Mattos lost to Levan Clark (6-1, 6-0); Pavle Popovic fell to Pierre Frances (6-1, 6-0); Jeremy Smith battled hard but ultimately lost to Juan Manrique (7-5, 6-1); Christian Ranguelov came up short against Max Desmars (6-3, 6-0) and Scott Busbee lost to John Coppabianca (6-0, 6-1).
Newberry drops to 0-1 on the season. The squad will travel to Hartsville, S.C., for its next match against Coker College on Friday, February 19. The first matches are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
