WINGATE, N.C. - A lackluster defensive performance by the Newberry College men's soccer team resulted in an 8-0 shutout at the hands of Wingate University, sending the Wolves home with their third straight loss.

Newberry (1-7-2, 0-3-1 South Atlantic Conference) let in six second half goals, three by Wingate (7-2, 3-1 SAC) sophomore Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who recorded his first collegiate hat trick.

Senior Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) sparked the Bulldog offense when he took a cross from teammate Stephen Kehoe (Newry, Ireland) that skimmed past the Wolves defense in the 18th minute to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0.

Then in the 23rd minute, Bulldog Jack Vundum (Birmingham, England) sent a penalty shot past Newberry goalie Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Lima nailed home his first goal of the evening when he took a cross from Vundum and sent it to the back of the net. Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) then rolled in a loose ball in the penalty area in the 61st for the easy goal and a 4-0 Wingate lead.

Five minutes later, Lima struck again as he sent in a cross from Luke Mulholland (Preston, England). Lima tapped in his fourth of the year and third of the game in the 68th minute with assists by McKenna and Mulholland.

Bulldog Keith Pittman (Matthews, N.C.) put in his own rebound in the 75th minute after hitting the crossbar before Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) chipped a shot over Newberry replacement goalie Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) for the final goal.

The Wolves took just three shots during the game, two by senior Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) and the other by Stephen Bass (Fayetteville, Ga.), two of those coming during the first half with Bass taking the only shot on target. Wingate took 34 shots during the contest, 17 of which were on goal.

Johnson saved eight shots during the loss, playing 75 minutes in front of the net while Sweatt played the final 15 minutes. Joey Calandra played the length of the match and saved just one for the Bulldogs.

Newberry returns home this Saturday, Oct. 9, to wrap up its non-conference schedule against Francis Marion (3-6-1, 1-2 Peach Belt Conference) at 4 p.m.
