Wolves drop 3-0 dog fight to Wingate

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team was shutout for the second straight game as the Wolves were blanked, 3-0, by Wingate University.

Wingate (5-1-3, 3-0-1 South Atlantic Conference) sophomore and SAC Player of the Week Izabella Martinez (Plymouth, Mass.) put in the first goal on a breakaway shot from 10 yards out, giving the Bulldogs the lead at the eight minute mark as they never looked back.

Newberry (2-8, 2-3) managed just two shots on goal during the loss, one by Meagan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) in the first half and the other by Lora More (Raleigh, N.C.) in the second.

“You have to hand it to Wingate, they played a great game and the result is an indication of that,” said Newberry head coach Karrie Miller. “We lost a lot of momentum after last week's loss (1-0 to Tusculum) but there are no excuses.”

The Bulldogs struck again in the 16th minute, this time on a Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) chip-in after a throw-in from teammate Brandi Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) and a headed pass from Krestin Williams (Summerville, S.C.).

Williams then fired in the third and final Wingate goal of the game in the 59th minute with a Miranda assists that came just shy of midfield.

Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) saved eight Bulldog shots while Wingate goalie Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) saved both Wolves attempts on goal.

The Wolves finish up their five game home stand going 2-3 and will now take to the road for five straight, starting on Oct. 9 as they take on Erskine in Due West, S.C.
