Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - For the second night in a row, the Wolves (13-12, 5-9 SAC) could not seem to find their offense and it ended up costing them in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-22 loss to Lincoln Memorial (17-5, 9-5 SAC).
“I thought that Lincoln Memorial really had the balance that we lacked today,” said head coach David Nicholson. “We couldn't get anything going and it is really starting to get frustrating, but with five matches remaining we can't give up. We just have to keep moving forward.”
Newberry started out on the wrong foot, giving up a 4-1 Railsplitter run to begin the match. The Wolves never lead in the set and were only able to cut the Railsplitter lead down to one in a forgettable first set. Newberry hit a paltry .042 compared to the .244 Lincoln Memorial countered with. Nine errors would contribute to the home team's woes and place them in a 1-0 hole.
Things were looking up for the scarlet and gray in the opening moments of the second set. A kill from Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.), a service ace from Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and a Railsplitter service error helped the Wolves to an early 3-1 edge.
Their lead was short-lived however as the visitors went on a 7-1 run to take control of the set for good. The score would wind up the same as the first set, 25-15 in favor of Lincoln Memorial. Newberry managed only a .073 hitting percentage with five errors.
With their backs against the wall the Wolves opened up a 4-1 lead to begin the deciding set courtesy of kills from Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.), Katie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.), a block from Scott and Nye and a Lincoln Memorial attack error.
The Railsplitters responded with a run of their own to tie thing up at five. Lincoln Memorial controlled the match, leading 16-13 before the Wolves made a bid to win the third set. Davenport made a kill to spark a 7-0 run to give the Wolves a 20-16 lead.
Lincoln Memorial then rattled off four straight points to even matters at 20. Both squads would trade points and the score sat at 22-22 before the Railsplitters ended the match with a 3-1 run.
Scott led the Wolves with seven kills, a block assist and a dig.
Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) contributed 14 assists, two kills, eight digs and a service ace.
Andrade racked up 16 digs to compliment her service ace.
The Wolves return to action next Wednesday (Oct. 27) as they finish up their non-conference schedule with a home tilt against USC Aiken. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
