Box Score ANDERSON, S.C. - Looking to end their six match losing streak the Wolves visited the only other South Atlantic Conference squad in the Palmetto State and hoped to win on their home court just as Anderson did against Newberry back on September 7. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Trojans did just enough to overcome a strong attack by the scarlet and gray and win the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 26-24).
Newberry was startled by an early 6-2 run by Anderson to begin the match, but settled in nicely eventually battling back to tie things up at eight. Despite the comeback Anderson responded and pushed their lead to 10-8. For the rest of the set it would be the Wolves playing catch up, tying things up six times through the remainder of the set. With the score sitting at 23-23 an Anderson kill and a Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.) attack error would give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Offense was the theme of the set as the Wolves hit .353 and the Trojans swatted .333.
The squads would trade points for the entirety of the second set which featured a staggering 20 ties and 13 lead changes. The conclusion of the second set was eerily identical to the first - right down to an Anderson kill and a Nye attack error to close things out, giving Anderson a 2-0 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, The Wolves came out swinging to begin the deciding set. Sam Parrish (Angola, Ind.), Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) would each get kills in the early minutes to give the Wolves a 4-1 lead. The Trojans came right back though, tying things up at four. The rest of the set was played close with neither side able to open up more than a two point lead.
The scoreboard read 21-21 when a pair of Anderson errors gave the Wolves life. After Anderson called timeout, Harris sent a service attempt into the net. On the next point, Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) gave the Wolves the lead with her sole kill of the evening, but unbeknownst to the scarlet and gray that would be their final point of the night. The Trojans scored four straight points consisting of three kills and a block to put the match in the books.
The Wolves outhit the Trojans .262 to .208 but the 10 service errors would end up spelling doom for the visitors as they dropped their seventh straight match.
Parrish led the Wolves from an offensive standpoint, racking up 16 kills, six digs, a service ace and a block assist.
Harris contributed 10 kills to the effort, and fell just one dig short of a double-double. The 5-foot-8 senior chipped in two assists and a block assist as well.
Scott was the third leading scorer for the Wolves, posting nine kills with three digs and a block assist.
Blakely handed out 18 assists and split time at the setter position with Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) who finished with 11 helpers.
The Wolves return to action this Friday (Oct. 15) as they travel to North Carolina to take on Lenoir-Rhyne. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. They conclude their weekend stint in the north when they match up against Brevard on Saturday (Oct. 16). The first serve is slated for 2 p.m.
