NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team used a solid defensive effort to shut out USC Aiken but was unable to score after two overtimes and earned its second tie of the season, 0-0.

Newberry (1-7-2, 0-2-0 SAC) came up short on the shot advantage to USC Aiken (4-3-1, 1-0-0 Peach Belt Conference) 24 to 17 but Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) make 15 saves to shut out the Pacers and secure the tie for the scarlet and gray.

Newberry put six shots on USC Aiken goalkeeper Devin Lemaire but was unable to find the net. Newberry looked for the first goal with an opening shot from Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, Nigeria) in the second minute but the ball missed wide.

Joel Johnson made his presence felt early when he stopped Brett Van Pelt on a breakaway in the fourth minute. Johnson challenged Van Pelt and blocked the Pacer's shot to keep the game even at 0-0.

USC Aiken took five shots on goal in the first half and Newberry recorded six, but neither side proved able to secure a goal and the teams entered halftime tied, 0-0.

Newberry looked for a go-ahead goal throughout the second half, with the team's best chance coming on a Ruben Bravo (Camden, S.C.) shot in the 78th minute that found its way into the hands of Lemaire.

Johnson made three saves in the first overtime period and two in the second overtime frame to keep USC Aiken off the board, but a lack of goals meant the game would end with a 0-0 tally. Johnson moves to 1-7-2 with the shutout, his second of the season.

Johnathan Caratella (Rock Hill, S.C.) made his first career start for Newberry, playing 63 minutes in the contest.

Garrison Koplen (Woodstock, Ga.) earned the match's only yellow card for Newberry and Brett Van Pelt received one for USC Aiken.

Newberry will return to South Atlantic Conference play in its next match on Sunday, September 4 when the team travels to Tusculum College. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
