Newberry College volleyball cruises past North Greenville in straight sets

Box Score

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team (11-8, 2-3 SAC) completed a successful day in Newberry sports with a sweep of North Greenville (7-13). Head coach David Nicholson had his team competing for playing time this week, and the result was a complete effort from the entire team and a convincing victory. Newberry hit .286 in the match and won sets by scores of 25-19, 25-10 and 25-18.

The match started evenly and was tied for the eighth time at 11-11. At that point, Newberry finally started to put together runs and build a lead. Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.) served well and earned Newberry several points. Nye came up with a kill from the right side on set point to secure the opening set.

Newberry displayed some of their most impressive attacks of the season in the second set. Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) used her serve to put Newberry ahead early. Once ahead, the team never looked back and amassed an astonishing .487 hitting percentage in the set to win easily.

The third set was close, and Newberry had to come from behind to take the victory. This time Newberry took advantage of the services of Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) to tie the match and ultimately pull away.

Newberry returns home this weekend to face off against South Atlantic Conference opponents. The team will host Catawba on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wingate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
