Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry women's soccer team found itself evenly matched against South Atlantic Conference foe Wingate University and the teams fought to a scoreless tie after two overtimes, 0-0.
Newberry (7-2-1, 2-0-1 SAC) entered the match ranked ninth in the Southeast Region in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll while Wingate (6-0-3, 0-0-1 SAC) entered at 10th, and the closeness in the rankings appeared on the field.
Neither team found the net in regulation, as Wingate took six shots in the first two halves to Newberry's two shots.
Cassie Smith's (Lyman, S.C.) shot in the 50th minute marked Newberry's only shot until the final minute of regulation, when Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) fired a shot that missed wide left.
Wingate recorded the only opportunity of the first overtime. Kelly Adams took a shot that would have given Wingate the win, but Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) proved equal to the chance and made the save. The teams could not find a score and the game entered a second overtime.
Wingate registered two shots in the second overtime but neither found the net, and the game ended in a scoreless tie.
Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades made four saves in the contest and her record moves to 7-2-1 on the season. She has not been scored on in 233:19, dating back to the team's 3-2 loss to Charleston Southern on September 19.
Wingate took three corner kicks in the match, while Newberry took two.
Newberry picked up two yellow cards in the match. Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England) received one in the 27th minute and Taryn Bristol (Charlotte, N.C.) received on in the 86th minute. Wingate received one caution, issued to Kerstin Williams in the 14th minute.
Newberry will continue with South Atlantic Conference play, returning home to take on Catawba College on Wednesday, September 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
