Newberry shuts out Brevard in first SAC home match, 5-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team took its first South Atlantic Conference game at home this season in style, cruising past Brevard College, 5-0.

Newberry (7-2-0, 2-0-0 SAC) powered past Brevard (4-5-0, 0-3-0 SAC) with a potent combination of offensive firepower and shutdown defense, outshooting the Tornados 14 to two and winning the corner kick battle, five to two.

Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) led off the scoring for the scarlet and gray early in the first half. In the 12th minute, Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) found Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) who took a shot from the penalty area. Brevard goalkeeper Sydney Douglas made the save, but Moore met the rebound and put the ball in the open net to put Newberry up, 1-0. The goal marks Moore's first of the season.

Newberry struck again in the 24th minute, with Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) passing to Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England), who sent in a cross that found Tiffany Kinner in the air. Kinner headed the ball in, putting Newberry ahead, 2-0. Her goal marked the first of the freshman's collegiate career.

Another freshman would score just under five minutes later, when Lora Moore chipped a pass over a defender and found Laura Mottel, who took the ball and fired one past Sydney Douglas for the score. The goal gave Newberry a 3-0 lead, one the team would keep for the rest of the half.

Newberry wasn't finished scoring for the match, however. In the 61st minute, Michaela Peach fed Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.), who dribbled through the defense and scored her third goal of the season to make the score 4-0 in favor of the scarlet and gray. Fowler, Mottel and Peach now lead Newberry in goals for the season with three.

Newberry scored one more time for good measure and it didn't take long after Fowler's score. One minute later, Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) streaked down the right side, drew the goalkeeper out and sent a cross to the far post, where Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) did the rest and scored from in close to add to the Newberry lead, 5-0.

Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) improved her record to 7-2-0 and did not have to make a save as the Newberry defense limited the Brevard attack. Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) entered the match in the 73rd minute and two saves, keeping the Tornados off the board.

The scarlet and gray will continue with SAC play and travel to Wingate University on Saturday, September 26 for a match at 4 p.m.
