Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - A come-from-behind win for Newberry College in the first game highlighted a split doubleheader with Nova Southeastern University at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Newberry took the first game in 11 innings by a 4-3 count, while Nova Southeastern won the second game, 7-0.
Newberry moves to 20-24 on the season entering Sunday's Senior Day twinbill against the Sharks. First pitch tomorrow is set for 1 p.m. Nova Southeastern is now 35-16 on the year.
Game One: Newberry 4, Nova Southeastern 3 (11 innings)
A pinch hit two-run, two-out double from Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) kept Newberry hopes alive late in the game, and an RBI double from Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) gave the hosts the come-from-behind 4-3 win.
Nova took the lead off of Newberry starter Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) in the top of the first, loading the bases with the first three batters of the game and took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from J.D. Martinez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).
Dale Alberto (Davie, Fla.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a solo homerun in the third and Martinez added a solo shot of his own in the fifth.
Newberry put its first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth after Tyler Hartman (Deland, Fla.) led off with a double to left-center. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) drove Hartman home with a double down the left field line to cut the margin to two runs.
The scarlet and gray rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up. John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) led off with a single to center and there were runners on the corners after Berryhill reached on an error. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) loaded the bases with a two-out walk, and Pollack's two-run double tied the game up.
McElwee held the Sharks at bay with a solid eight-inning performance, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking five, while picking up no decision. Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.; 4-5 record) pitched 2-2/3 innings of solid relief to pick up the win after inheriting two runners from Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.).
Nova starter and national strikeout leader Michael Fiers (Pompano Beach, Fla.) allowed three runs - one earned - in 10 innings on the hill, striking out seven. But the bullpen proved to be the Sharks' downfall, as Zach North (Miami, Fla.; 1-3 record) gave up consecutive doubles to the only batters he saw.
Morin was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for Newberry, while Berryhill was 2-for-5 with the game-winning RBI.
