NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team dropped its seventh South Atlantic Conference match of the season by losing to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, 7-2.
Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) earned one of NC's two points by defeating Jessica Guillette (6-0, 6-2). It is her first singles victory of the season. Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) earned Newberry's other point by defeating Kate Meiners (6-3, 6-4).
In other singles play, Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Jennifer Binney (6-0, 6-1); Lindsey Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Cathryn Jarrett (6-1, 6-1); Allison Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) dropped a match against Bekah Rhoney (6-0, 6-1); and Denise Williams (Blackville, S.C.) was defeated by Mariel Mena (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles action, Mortimer and Crouch dropped a close top flight match to Meiners and Binney (8-6); Cheesborough and Williams lost to Jarrett and Gullette (8-4); and the Kyzer sisters fell to Mena and Rhoney (8-1).
The Newberry College women's team now falls to 0-12 overall and 0-7 in the SAC. The scarlet and gray will complete their final match of the season against Catawba this Sunday at 2 pm. Catawba led Newberry by three points on Tuesday before rain forced the teams to postpone the rest of the match. Lenoir-Rhyne (1-15, 1-7 in the SAC) will play its final match of the regular season in Greer, S.C. tomorrow against North Greenville at 1 pm.
