Newberry women taken down by Wingate Bulldogs, 8-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team earned its second conference loss Saturday afternoon by falling to the Wingate Bulldogs at home, 8-1.

The scarlet and gray fell into an early hole as they were swept in doubles play. Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) lost to Hollyn Alberghini and Sam Alschlager (8-1); Allison and Lindsey Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Pierce Dillard and Kara Stasikelis (8-0); and Sam Armstrong (Barnwell, S.C.) and Denise Williams (Blackville, Ga.) were dropped by Zoe Hartas and Ewa Opala (8-1).

Mortimer entered the match with a singles record of 3-4 and earned Newberry's only win of the day. Her fourth win of the season came by way of a victory over Stasikelis in the first flight (7-6 (7-3), 6-1).

In other singles action, Crouch fell to Dillard (6-1, 6-1); Cheesborough lost to Hartas (6-0, 6-0); Allison Kyzer lost to Alberghini (6-1, 6-0); Lindsey Kyzer was taken down by Alschlager (6-0, 6-0); and Denise Williams fell to Opala (6-1, 6-0).

The loss puts Newberry at 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The scarlet and gray will return to action on Friday, March 27 in a home match against Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 pm. Next up for Wingate (6-4, 3-0 in the SAC) will be a home match against Barton this Sunday at 1 pm.
