Newberry women fall to North Greenville, 7-2

GREER, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team hit the road to face off against North Greenville University Friday afternoon but lost, 7-2.

The match was a part of the first annual Greer College Cup, an event sponsored by the Greer Community Tennis Association. After the match, the organization sponsored a dinner party for both teams and awarded a plaque to North Greenville in honor of the victory.

Despite the loss, Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) was on top of her game and won in both singles and doubles play. She defeated the Crusaders' Salem Erni (6-4, 6-3) and teamed up with Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) to drop Erni and Katherine Shaw (8-5).

In other singles play, Crouch fell to Shaw (6-0, 6-0); Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) lost to Courtney Lynn (6-1, 6-2); Allison Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) was beat by Cassie Curits (6-0, 6-0); Lindsey Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) fell to Stephanie Tyrpak (6-1, 6-0); and Denise Williams (Blackville, Ga.) lost to Stewart (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles action, the Kyzer Sisters fell to Lynn and Curtis (8-1) while Cheesborough and Sam Armstrong (Barnwell, S.C.) lost to Stewart and Sarah Stanga (8-1).

The loss puts Newberry at 0-6 overall this season. The team will have a chance to earn its first win Saturday in a home conference match against Wingate at 1 pm. North Greenville (4-3) will face off against USC Lancaster on Friday, March 27 at 3 pm.
