Box Score 2 LAURINBURG, N.C. - The Newberry College softball team continued to overwhelm its opponents as the scarlet and gray swept St. Andrews Presbyterian on the road, 4-2 and 7-1. The Sunday sweep extended Newberry's season-opening winning streak to ten and dropped the Knights to 4-6.
Game One: Newberry 4, St. Andrews 2
Newberry gained the lead in the third inning and would keep for the rest of the game as Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) won her fifth game of the season with her complete game six strikeout performance.
Jessica Teague (Charlotte, N.C.), who entered the game as pinch runner after Angela Cataldo (Sumter, S.C.) was hit by a pitch, scored from first base in the third inning as the Knight's third baseman's throw to second allowed Teague to advance to home as the ball flew into the outfield.
The scarlet and gray added three runs in the following inning as Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) knocked her fourth homerun of the season. Hammond's two-run bomb scored Whitney Wiles (Iva, S.C.), who reached base on a hit by pitch. Catlado's one-out single scored Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) to give Newberry a 4-0 lead.
Hicks allowed a homerun in the bottom six to Jasmine Dobbin and another earned run the seventh for a final score of 4-2, as Newberry and St. Andrews both had five hits in the game.

A six-run third inning capped a 7-1 victory for Newberry as Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) moved to 5-0 on the year with her complete game six strikeout outing.
The Knights gained their first lead of the day in the second inning off a Nicole Bailey two-out single scoring Danyell Marquez for a 1-0 lead.
However, the Knight's lead would be short lived as the scarlet and gray answered in the top of the third with six runs on seven hits. Newberry started the inning with six straight singles as Amanda Schumacher (Greenville, S.C.) lead off the inning with a one-bagger and was followed by five singles all over the field to score five runs. Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) drove in the inning's final run with her one out single, which scored Stephanie Blazer (Greenville, S.C.).
Newberry added another run in the sixth inning as Huckestein lead off with a double to leftfield and scored on a Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) single down the leftfield line.
Huckestein utilized three three-up three-down innings to give Newberry a 10-0 start for the first time in school history. The scarlet and gray had eleven hits in the game and stranded only four compared to St. Andrews seven on six hits.
Kat Hammond led the scarlet and gray with three RBIs on the day with her 3-for-8 hitting. Amy Jarrell had the most hits for Newberry as she went 4-for-6 with one RBI.

Newberry returns to action this weekend as they host the Mid-South Invitational in nearby Spartanburg, S.C. at the 295 Complex. The scarlet and gray will face five different opponents in the three-day event starting with Tiffin University on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
