Late goals do in Newberry against No. 11 Carson-Newman, 3-1

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team tied its match against No. 11 Carson-Newman with five minutes left in regulation, but two late goals from the Eagles gave Newberry a loss on its home turf, 3-1.

Newberry (13-4-1, 5-2-1 SAC) allowed two goals in the 86th and 90th minutes to Carson-Newman (15-2-1, 6-1-1 SAC; No. 11 NSCAA/adidas) in the loss. Though the scarlet and gray were outshot 16 to 15, both teams tallied seven shots on goal each.

Neither team scored in the first half, though each team took seven shots in the period.

Carson-Newman broke through to score first, converting on a chance in the 58th minute. Nikki Brannen took a Melissa Morris feed that popped up into the penalty area and chipped the loose ball into the net, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Newberry probed the Carson-Newman defense for the rest of the second half looking for an opportunity. One arose in the 85th minute when Carson-Newman goalkeeper took out Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) in the penalty area and Newberry was awarded a penalty kick. Senior Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) lived up to the team's earlier recognation of its seniors, scoring on the kick and evening the score, 1-1.

Unfortunately for Newberry, Carson-Newman would tally two more before the final whistle. Just over one minute after Geisman's equalizer, Carson-Newman's Lizeth Munguia took a Trenna Howell cross in the penalty area and scored, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage with three minutes remaining. Carson-Newman added an insurance goal in the final minute when Howell broke free, running almost the length of the field and chipping the ball in to move the score to 3-1.

Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) led Newberry in shots, with three. Sara Geisman led Newberry in shots on goal, with two.

Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) made four saves in the contest. Her record moves to 13-4-1 after the loss.

Prior to kickoff, Newberry honored its four departing seniors: Sara Geisman, Lindsey Landgrebe, Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, N. Yorkshire, England) and Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.).
