GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry College volleyball team continued its road stretch with an impressive outing in an important South Atlantic Conference match against Tusculum. The team persevered through any potential traveling weariness and attacked at a .313 percentage on their way to a three-set victory. Newberry (17-11, 7-6 SAC) was previously behind Tusculum (16-12, 7-7 SAC) in the standings but will jump the Pioneers with the victory. Newberry won sets by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-15.

The first set was close after Newberry overcame a 7-2 opening in favor of the Pioneers. Newberry then rallied back to even the score at 8-8. The subsequent points were close and the set would be tied five more times down the stretch. Newberry got stronger as the set progressed and ultimately won seven of the final nine points to win the opening set.

Newberry continued to ride the opening-set momentum for the majority of the match. They opened the second set with a 9-3 run and would never let the lead fall below six for the rest of the set. The scarlet and gray went on three separate four-point runs and two five-point runs in the 25-14 second set victory.

The third set was close in the early going and was tied for the seventh time at 13-13. Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) stepped up the service-line and embarked on a seven-point run to ultimately put the set out of reach.

Harris shined on the afternoon and her numbers stand to prove it. She ended the day with 11 kills and 13 digs combined with 3 service aces and a block. Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the team in kills with 13 and Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) had the team-leading 14 digs.

With the win, Newberry surpasses Tusculum in the SAC standings and moves into a fourth-place tie with Catawba, Newberry's next opponent. The pivotal Catawba match is on Friday, October 30, in Salisbury, N.C.
