Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team hosted the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Carson-Newman (13-7, 7-3 SAC) limited Newberry's attack to a .088 hitting percentage and brushed past Newberry (15-11, 5-6 SAC) in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.
The opening set was closely contested and saw seven ties in the early going. The Eagles succeeded in preventing Newberry from scraping together any scoring runs and only trailed Newberry one time in the set. With the score even at 16-16, Newberry surrendered a 9-2 run by way of five attack errors and a handful of Carson-Newman kills.
The open stages of the second set were also close until the Eagles managed a six-point scoring run and led 16-10. Newberry failed to match the run and couldn't draw any closer. The scarlet and gray fended off four set-point opportunities before falling in the second set by a score of 25-21.
The third set was the closest of them all as Newberry fell behind several times but continued to claw their way back into it. The scarlet and gray managed an 18-17 lead for the first time in the set but allowed the Eagles to achieve several kills late in the set and close out the victory.
Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) led the team in both kills and digs with 10 and 16, respectively. Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded a strong outing at the net with 4 blocks. Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) ended the day with 23 assists, more than any player on either team.
Newberry begins a four-match road stretch with a match at Mars Hill on Friday, October 23.
