Newberry rallies to top Lenoir-Rhyne in overtime thriller, 2-1

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team trailed with four minutes left in its match against Lenoir-Rhyne University, but scarlet and gray refused to lose, scoring a goal late and taking down the Bears in overtime for the win, 2-1.

Newberry (11-3-1, 5-1-1 SAC) scored two goals in thirteen minutes to complete the rally against Lenoir-Rhyne (11-5-0, 2-3-0 SAC) and keep Newberry in first place in the South Atlantic Conference.

Newberry entered the match with the No. 9 ranking in the Southeast Region of this week's NCAA Division II poll, while Lenoir-Rhyne was ranked eighth.

The scarlet and gray took advantage of a Lenoir-Rhyne shorthanded situation to take the victory. Lenoir-Rhyne's Anna Casabier took a red card in the 83rd minute, sending her off of the pitch and forcing the Bears to play with 10 players for the remainder of the game. Newberry would capitalize soon after.

Down 1-0 late in the second half, Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) took a pass from Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) in the 86th minute and fired a shot from the penalty area into the right side of the net past Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell to even the game in dramatic fashion. The goal marks Mottel's fourth of the season.

Newberry would try for a game-winner in regulation but would have to wait until overtime. The scarlet and gray took the only shot in overtime and it proved the only shot that mattered. After a Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) corner kick, Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, N. Yorkshire, England) collected the loose ball in the penalty area and found the net with a chance, giving Newberry the 2-1 win.

Peach now leads the team in goals with five on the season.

Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades picked up her 11th win of the season in a four-save effort, seeing her record improve to 11-3-1. She currently maintains a goals against average of 0.47 and a save percentage of .899.

Lenoir-Rhyne got on the scoreboard early in the match. Marianne Broevik sent in a cross that connected with Catherine Hauck, who headed it in to give the Bears the 1-0 lead they would keep until Mottel's late-game equalizer.

Lenoir-Rhyne outshot Newberry 17-14, but Newberry put 10 of its shots on goal, compared to Lenoir-Rhyne's five shots on goal.

Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) led Newberry in shots, with three. Reetz and Michaela Peach each tallied two shots on goal, as eight different Newberry players recorded at least one.

Megan Douglas and Michaela Peach each received a yellow card for Newberry. Anna Casabier received a yellow in the first half and a red card in the second.

Newberry takes a break from South Atlantic Conference play for its next match when the team hosts the Pfeiffer University Falcons on Wednesday, October 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
