Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry opened its second rotation of match play on Tuesday evening with a match against the Brevard Tornados. The scarlet and gray entered the match undefeated against the Tornados as well as on a two-match win streak. Newberry continued both streaks with crisp and devastating attacks that overpowered Brevard. Newberry (15-9, 5-4 SAC) took the match in three sets over Brevard (11-9, 1-8 SAC) by scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.
The start of the first set indicated that the match might be played to a close, highly-contested conclusion. The teams exchanged hard-fought points evenly and saw ties at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5. Newberry finally opened up their attack and started to put together strings of points and slowly pull away. One such stretch came off of the service of freshman Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio). She coupled a service ace with a pair of Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) kills and a Tornado attack error to stretch Newberry's lead to 8 points. Newberry never looked back from there and cruised to win the opening set 25-17.
The second set opened with Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) using her serve to boost Newberry out to an early lead. Newberry attacked with an impressive .371 percentage and prevented the Tornados from producing any comeback runs down the stretch. The set ended with back-to-back kills from Lichtie, both off of sets from Browning.
Brevard came out after the break determined to prevent the sweep. They won points early and built a 16-10 lead; but then surrendered 7 consecutive points as well as the lead back to Newberry. Newberry never faltered once they had recaptured the lead. The scarlet and gray won key points down the stretch and closed out the final set and the sweep by a score of 25-22.
Lichtie was Newberry's star performer on the evening. The senior turned in a career-high 19 kills while attacking at an astonishing .412 percentage, a formidable mark with that many attempts. Lichtie also led the team in digs with 19 and recorded a service ace.
Browning had a successful outing herself with 40 assists, the second highest of her young career. She tallied 10 digs, additionally. Fernanda Frey (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 15 digs and Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) had 14.
Newberry continues their home stand with a match in Eleazer Arena against Lincoln Memorial on Friday, October 16. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
