NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team returned home this week to duel against the Saints of Limestone College, unfortunately for the scarlet and gray they would be defeated as they fell 2-1.

Limestone (3-0) led off the scoring in the 12th minute as Joel Moran (Kinross, Scotland) received a cross from Ali Benson (Hull, England) setting him up in front of the goal. Moran took advantage of the opportunity and drilled the ball past goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Newberry (0-3) offensive tandem of Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas) and Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) would not be denied in the first half as they connected on a goal in the 39th minute. Ogunseye threaded a pass through the Saints' defense and Boyd galloped to strike the ball over the shoulder of goalkeeper Mark Davidson (London, England) and into the net for the equalizing goal.

Boyd has scored in every game this year as three of his four goals have come from Ogunseye assists.

The Saints would have an answer for the tandem as they struck back two minutes later in the 41st minute. Keegan Ziada (Melbourne, Australia) would rebound a shot off Dieterich and took a shot of his own that wouldn't be stopped by the senior keeper, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The sweltering late-summer heat took its toll on several players as cramping and other heat-related injuries overwhelmed the second half. The heat didn't deter the teams from playing a physical second half though, as each team committed ten fouls and received one caution.

Both teams had their scoring opportunities in the second half, but both were halted by stifling defenses. Newberry's closest chance came in the 55th minute as a blast from Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) caromed off the cross bar.

Newberry will get some rest over the week as the scarlet and gray return to action a week from today at Brevard College on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
