Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team (4-5-0, 3-1-0 SAC) extended its lead in the South Atlantic Conference with a 2-1 victory over Wingate University (7-3-0, 0-1-0 SAC), the No. 5 ranked team in the Southeast Region.
Newberry was lead by freshman midfielder Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.), who had two goals in the game. Johns' first goal came in the 22nd minute as she received a long pass from fellow freshman midfielder Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) and ripped a shot from 25 yards out on the left side of the field that banged off the right goal post and into the back of the net.
With the 1-0 lead, Newberry controlled the ball throughout the rest of the first half as would go into halftime with the lead.
Johns struck again in the 59th minute as she received a pass from senior forward Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.). Carbonell's pass set up Johns 20 yards away from the goal and she rocketed a shot that sailed into the right corner to give the scarlet and gray the 2-0 lead.
Wingate refused to be shut out as they scored late in the 87th minute, when Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) shot from 35 yards out and placed the ball over freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.).
The final three minutes were very stressful for the scarlet and gray as Wingate tried to score the equalizing goal, but was unsuccessful as the game ended at 2-1.
Rhoades improved her record to 4-5 on the season and recorded five saves in the game.
Newberry returns to action on October 1 at 7 p.m. when the scarlet and gray will face the Lakers of Clayton State in Morrow, Ga.
