Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team extended their win streak against the Brevard College Tornados to five matches Friday night by defeating them, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-17).

Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) was as dominant as ever against Brevard setting a career high with seven service aces along with six kills and three digs. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) played efficient volleyball with 29 assists, six digs and a .500 attack percentage. The leading scorer for the Tornados was Brook Seaman (Spring Hill, Fla.) with a match high 11 kills.

Newberry started its match off with a bang and never let off the gas pedal. After being tied 4-all in the first set, the scarlet and gray went on a 15-3 run that put the Tornados in a deep hole. Brevard attempted to spark a comeback but the powerful Newberry offense kept them at bay to win the set, 25-15. Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) played great in the opening set earning kills on all four attacks and scored a solo block that sparked Newberry's scoring run. Maia would finish the night with 10 kills and an outstanding .643 attack percentage.

The second set was similar to the first as Newberry's efficient offense gradually buried the Tornados. The scarlet and gray would score three or more straight points eight different times which kept Brevard from making any sort of scoring run of their own. NC would go on to win the second set, 25-16. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had her best set of the night leading her team in kills (5), digs (5), and aces (3). Sales went on to total nine kills and 12 digs in the match.

In the final set, the scarlet and gray once again drove the Tornados into the ground with a highly potent offense. Up 19-15, NC went on a 6-2 run that sealed the set and match, 25-17. Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had a solid defensive set with a team high five digs that added to her match high 13 total digs.

With the win the Newberry College volleyball team improves their record to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The scarlet and gray will go on the road this coming Tuesday, September 30 to face Southern Wesleyan. They will return to Eleazer Arena on October 3 to kickoff Homecoming weekend against Carson-Newman at 7 p.m.
