Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College women's soccer team (2-5-0, 1-1-0 SAC) was stopped by Catawba (5-2-0, 1-0-0 SAC) on Saturday night in their quest for a 2-0 start in the South Atlantic Conference as they were defeated 1-0.
Catawba's freshman Lena Suarez (Charlotte, N.C.) scored six minutes into the match. Suarez took a cross from Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, Md.) and headed the ball into the back of the net. The early goal gave the Catawba Indians a 1-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
The scarlet and gray's junior midfielder Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, England) almost scored in the second minute, but Peach's shot was blocked off the line by the Catawba defense.
Newberry had several opportunities to score in the second half as freshman midfielder Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario) had her shot saved off the line by a defender in the 59th minute. Thirty seconds later freshman forward Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.) had her blast saved by Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkington, Mass.).
Neither team threatened to score in the final 30 minutes with the best remaining chance coming from Catawba in the final minute.
Catawba's Webster finished with one save as she posted her first career shutout and improved her record to 3-1-0. Newberry's freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) had four stops in the loss.
Newberry will continue SAC play on Wednesday, September 24, as they travel to Brevard, N.C. to face off against the Brevard Tornados at 4 p.m.
